Sant'Antimo Abbey
A medieval architectural masterpiece nestled among the wonders of the Siena lands

Legend has it that Sant'Antimo was founded in the 9th century, during the Holy Roman Empire. According to legend, Charlemagne established the abbey in 781. The king, who was on his way back from Rome with his army, was forced to stop here due to an unknown plague. An angel appeared to him and instructed him to give the sick an infusion made from a local herb. Because of this cure, the army was saved, and the king decided to construct the church as a thank you. During the mass, one can still hear mystical Gregorian chants sung by French monks dressed in long white robes, providing a truly mystical and unforgettable experience!
