Santa Maria della Scala
Formerly one of Europe's oldest and largest hospitals, today it is one of the city's most important museum and cultural centers

Santa Maria della Scala is located right in front of Siena Cathedral and is one of the oldest hospitals in Europe. In the past it was the place where pilgrims, the poor and abandoned children were helped. The complex, laid out on four levels, is a living testimony to nearly a thousand years of Western history: through corridors carved into the tuff, churches and chapels, streets and open-air courtyards, frescoed halls...Santa Maria della Scala represents a "city within a city," a place charged with meaning, history and art.
